The Centre for Sociocultural Studies on the Human Movement (CESC) investigates the human movement, the cultural construction of its meaning and its transformation through different epochs and manifestations, such as dancing, sports, gymnastics, street runs, among others.
CESC was established in 2004 replacing the former Group for Sociocultural Studies of the Human Movement, founded in 1985 and whose intention was to create a space for researches on cultural manifestations of the human movement and its implications on society. CESC’s study and researches proposals begin with a macrosocial approach and intend to bring to Physical Education arguments and methodologies from Social Sciences, Histories, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology and Pedagogy, directly related sport issues and motor activity extending the comprehension of these phenomena beyond the physiologic-anatomic scope.
Nowadays, the Centre faces the proposed challenge of increment studies and researches in Physical Education from the sociocultural perspective. The starting point was its resizing, from the understanding of the study and research areas and the organization and systematization of information on the international and national academic production. These actions are expanding the knowledge of this production through articles, books and theses.
